Repairing Ball Marks on the Golf Course

Updated: Jan 21, 2023

When you check in at the golf course please inquire as to what the golf courses policy is on repairing ball marks on the grass.

Often, when golfers play, they brush the grass with their clubs, and this can leave scrapes, and when golf balls land on the short grass on the putting greens, it can leave an indentation. In most instances a Divot tool is required to repair these marks. This tool can be purchased for under $10.00. In other cases, a container of sand is provided to the golfers to fill these marks and the golfer will pour a little into the mark and lightly stomp the sand to fill the mark as evenly as possible (level to the surrounding grass).

Repairing ball marks and repairing them correctly is a huge help to the golf course, the grounds team and your fellow players that are coming behind you. It helps to prevents future balls from landing into these indentations and creating a bad lie (when the golf ball sits in a position that makes getting clean contact difficult).
