Golf Tee Box Colors

Updated: Mar 4, 2021

Tee levels should be thought of in terms of skill level and not age or gender.

The most common tee colors used on golf courses are blue, white, yellow and red.

A general rule of thumb to determine which tee box is right for you is if you hit your driver under 200 yards, play from the closest tee. If you hit from 200-225 the next farthest tee, and so on. When you are hitting 275+ accurately you should be playing the farthest tees back. (1)

Blue – (Tiger Woods Tee Off) Blue tees are usually the farthest from the hole and are reserved for experienced golfers or those who have exceptional driving range.

White – Competition (200-250 yards)

Yellow - Recreational (200 yards or less)

Red - Beginner level. Reds are positioned closest to the hole.
