Golf bags will either have a single or dual carry strap system. Cart bags traditionally have a single strap while stand and carry bags usually have two but may have one. The double strap will allow you carry your bag like a “backpack”. Overall, you want a bag with comfortable, wide, and well-padded straps. Adjustable fit is also important so you can get a comfortable carry.

A golf bag may also contain many types of pockets. The side pockets of every golf bag are crafted for holding commonly used accessories. If you're carrying spare golf balls, tees, ball markers, etc., then place it all in the top and front pockets for easier access.

What are the different types of golf bag?

Tour bags

A Tour bag has plenty of extra space for all belongings, alongside your golf clubs, such as extra clothing, waterproofs, gloves and golf balls, so it is no wonder that they are popular with professionals when on Tour – hence the name.

The official maximum number of clubs allowed in a Tour golf bag is 14.

Cart bags

A cart bag is a golf bag that you must place on a hand cart or power cart to take around the course. Although this style of bag has a strap to allow you to sling it over your shoulder, it isn't able to stand effectively on uneven surfaces.

Golf Cart bags typically have a single strap and do not have a built-in stand mechanism since they are not designed for carrying on the course.

The official maximum number of clubs allowed in a Cart golf bag is 14.

Stand bags

Stand bags or carry bags are unique in the fact that they feature two retractable legs which allow you to stand the bag up securely while on the golf course.

The official maximum number of clubs allowed in a Stand golf bag is 14.

Sunday/Pencil bags

The “Sunday Bag” name originated back in the day when most people observed the Sabbath and weren't allowed to work on Sundays, including caddies. The lack of caddies meant golfers had to carry their own bags, so they opted for a smaller/lighter bag.

The Sunday bag is a lightweight golf bag it is meant to be easier to carry and typically smaller than a standard golf bag. It is intended to carry a limited number of clubs and the bare minimum of accessories. Sometimes you will hear the words “Pencil Bags” because some of these bags have one rigid support.

A typical Sunday golf bag will fit about 6-7 clubs or so. With selection you can bring enough clubs to get you through your round without sacrificing any performance. Having 2 or 3 dividers will help keep your clubs organized and make them easier to take in or out the bag.

Sunday bags are also ideal for beginners or younger golfers that do not need the full range of clubs and have less access to carts and caddies. They also work well for older golfers that still want to get some enjoyable exercise.

Waterproof bags

Having a Waterproof bag means that in a sudden downpour, your golf clubs won't become drenched with water and turned into a complete mess. The cost for these types of bags is usually a little more than the other types of golf bags but having a waterproof bag can be invaluable.

Although you can probably cram all 14 clubs in this type of bag, it's best utilized with half as many. This is a bag for easy walking, a quick nine holes, or maybe a par 3 course.

Travel bags

Travel bags are used when you are playing an awesome golf course while traveling. A hard case will offer you the best protection.

Travel bags have a built-in protective shell that prevents impact to the club head where it meets the shaft.

It’s always best to evaluate whether you need your clubs vs. the cost of renting clubs.

You can pack your 14 clubs, shoes, towels, balls, tees, sweater and rain gear. Just be mindful of the airline weight restrictions.

Golf Bag Tip: Always leave your bag at a convenient spot that is close to the green you are approaching and the tee you will be playing next. By being able to leave the bag on the ground in a spot where it is not in the way of other golfers, you will save yourself quite a bit of work while playing your round of golf.
